What Would Ebert Do?
December 4, 2009

One of the rules that I have for myself in Instant Classic is to never include references to current movies or living people - basically anything that could potentially date the strip. Every once in a while, I'll break the rule for comedic effect (whether or not you find it funny or not), and today is one of those days.

The reason of course, is the person I'm using. Roger Ebert is a living God in the filmmaking world. It's not so much that he's a critic - but he's a participant. My problem with most critics is that I find them somewhat arrogant when they feel they can rip apart films behind the giant wall of a newspaper or username. It's the reason why I'm also a filmmaker as well as a comic artist - I feel like I'm participating in the sport.

No, Roger Ebert isn't a filmmaker, per se. But to the community, he has been invaluable. Between his own film festival and his countless books - he's been laying down the ground work for new generations of filmmakers. He doesn't just tell you what's wrong with a particular movie. But rather, what could be beneficial to future movies. In that way, though humor and influence, he is one of the most prolific filmmakers we have.

One last thing! Tonight! At 11:59PM - the Great Instant Classic Graphite Marathon comes to a close - get your requests in and don't risk being locked out! The first batch of sketches will be sent out soon! Thanks to everyone who's jumped in on it - it's been a lot of fun reading them.
